[Gyeonggi-do] Hallyu-wood Start Festival(Jackie Chan,Choi Ji-woo,Kim Yun-jin,Big Bang,Kim A-jung)


Hallyu-wood Start Festival
Ilsan Hallyu-wood project commences with plans to invest 280 billion won to develop culture-tourism complex


The project to build Hallyu-wood, the Mecca of Hallyu-based tourism has begun.


On May 29, 2008 on the Hallyu-wood construction site, Gyeonggi-do held the "Hallyu-wood Start Festival", the ground-breaking ceremony for Zone 1, which consists of a theme park and commercial facilities.


Unlike other ceremonies, the event was run like a cultural festival taking into account that Hallyu-wood is a culture-tourism complex. The event consisted of a Hangeul (Korean) fashion show, which showcased more than 20 models, a concert by the Goyang Philharmonic Orchestra, characters shows introducing Korean characters such as Dooly, and performances by singers such as the famous Jewelry.


A wide range of guests participated in the event, including PR ambassadors Jackie Chan and Choi Jiwoo, more than 20 Korean celebrities such as Kim Yun-jin, Kim A-jung, and Big Bang, cultural figures such as director Im Kwon-taek and leading figures in politics and economy. PR ambassadors Jackie Chan and Choi Ji-woo stated they would take the initiative in spreading Hallyu (Korean Wave) worldwide and making Hallyu-wood the Mecca of theme parks for people all over the world.

The Hallyu-wood project is about developing a culture-tourism complex consisting of a theme park, commercial facilities, a residential complex, hotel, contents-support center, EBS Korea Communications Commission broadcasting facilities, etc. on a site covering 994,756m2 in the area of Janghang-dong, Goyang, Gyeonggi-do. Zone 1 will hold a theme park and commercial facilities, Zone 2 will hold a luxury residential complex and hotel, and Zone 3 will hold a contents-support center.


The theme park in Zone 1, where the ground-breaking ceremony was held, won't be like existing amusement parks. It will be built as a city-oriented theme park of an entirely new concept. It will consist of facilities such as the 'Hallyu Studio', where drama and film-making experiences are offered, 'Animasia', a fusion of animation and entertainment facilities, 'Asian Garden' where events and festivals will be held year-round, etc.


The commercial facilities will include shops selling Hallyu merchandise, a Korean art school, a Korean cooking school, a Hallyu museum, a children's educational play facilities, a Korea gallery, a live performance arena, a multiplex cinema, and more.



1. Jackie Chan
1-1. Jackie Chan interviews with MBC Newsdesk
Jackie Chan, who recently announced that he would donate his entire assets of almost 400 million won, held an interview with MBC Newsdesk on December 14. Chan repeatedly stated that he would donate his all the charity organizations he's created to society and would not leave as so much a spoon when he dies.


Chan, who almost died shooting one of his movies, stated he found happiness through donation. He went onto add that once you become a philanthropist, it's difficult to stop because you worry about what others will think of you. "I have no choice but to do good things because people around me expect me to do so," he commented.


He added that he plans to focus on children's education and rehabilitation. Chan encouraged others to donate by saying, "A few hundred dollars of surgery money can change a child's life." Chan is currently shooting a movie in New Mexico, U.S.A.


1-2. Jackie Chan sends USD 10,000 and letter of encouragement to Kim Jang-hun
Singer Kim Jang-hun recently received a letter in Korean from Asian actor Jackie Chan. In the letter, which Kim publicly revealed, Chan wrote, "I heard about a young man who's relentlessly offering his services for the needy. Although small in amount, I wanted to take part in your deed." In addition, Chan wrote, "Most of all, please take care of your health. I hope you will continue to offer your beautiful services to those in need."


Kim stated that Chan's letter and check was like the swallow who came to Heungbu (who was the good-hearted one, unlike his wicked older brother, Nolbu) right after he fell sick at the West Coast Festival. He went to add, "Jackie told me not to reveal it because he was embarrassed, but I decided to do so because I found him so genuine and the letter so cute."
Chan had sent the letter along with a check in the amount of USD10,000 to Kim after he heard about Kim's collapse during the West Coast Festival this past July. At a concert held in Boryeong on December 6, Kim donated the money to the city.



2. Choi Ji-woo
2-1. Overseas fans show eagerly support Hallyu star, Choi Ji-woo
Posts from overseas fans are showing up on the viewers' board of SBS's Wednesday-Thursday drama, "Star's Lover". Overseas fans of the drama "Star's Lover" are showing their support on the SBS website in various languages such as English, German, Thai, and more.


One fan by the username 'nandaoluo' said that he/she is an ardent fan of Choi Ji-woo. He/she stated, "I've seen all the pieces that Choi Ji-woo has done," and went to add, "Thanks to Choi Ji-woo, my interest for Korea has become bigger." Post were made by fans not only from Asia, but from the West, such as Germany and Turkey.


A spokesman at SBS commented, "It looks like Hallyu celebrity Choi Ji-woo isn't just popular in Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, but also becoming famous in Thailand and Europe."


2-2. Overseas fans crowd at production announcement of "Star's Lover"
On November 25, Hallyu star Choi Ji-woo's overseas fans crowded at the production announcement of SBS's new Wednesday-Thursday drama "Star's Lover", written by Oh Su-yeon and directed by Bu Seong-cheol, proving just how popular she is overseas. There was a big crowd of fans from Japan, Taiwan, and other countries who'd come to see Choi Ji-woo and the entrance of the venue was packed with wreaths sent by fans in Tokyo, Kyushu and Taiwan. On the wreaths were message of support such as "Ji-woo Himae Fighting!" A spokesman stated, "The fans aren't just from Japan and Taiwan. One fan flew all the way from Europe to see her."



3. Kim Yun-jin
3-1. Kim Yun-jin's Lost 2008 chosen Top 10 TV Program
The ABC drama "Lost", in which Kim Yun-jin plays a leading role, was chosen 2008 AFI's Top 10 TV Programs by the American Film Institute (AFI). On December 14 (local time), the American Film Institute chose the year's top 10 TV programs as "Lost", "In Treatment", "John Adams", "Life", "Madman", "Office", "Recount", "Shield", "Wire" and "Breaking Bad". "Lost" was also chosen as one of the year's Top 10 Drama series by TIMES Magazine.


3-2. Kim Yun-jin chosen one of 25 Entertainers of the Year by Entertainment Weekly (EW)


Kim Yun-jin and Korean-born U.S. actor Daniel Dae Kim were chosen as two of the 25 Entertainers of the Year by American magazine Entertainment Weekly (EW). On December 14, Entertainment Weekly (EW) announced that Kim Yun-jin and Daniel Dae Kim, who star as a married couple on season 4 of ABC's "Lost", ranked 17th among 25 Top Entertainers of the  Year. Kim Yun-jin was chosen Entertainer of the Year by EW in 2005 as well. Every end of November, EW chooses one finalist among the 25 Top Entertainers of the Year and recognizes him/her as Entertainer of the Year.



4. Kim A-jung
4-1. Kim A-jung gives special lecture on emotional communication at Korea University
On November 20 at Korea University, Actress Kim A-jung gave a special lecture on emotional communication, which is one of the liberal arts subjects at the institute, elaborating on the interrelation between internal world of human beings and the emotions of actors. More than 80 students attended the lecture and held a Q&A session with the actress. Kim A-jung, who is currently a graduate student at the Graduate School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Korea University, stated, "It was a little overwhelming as I'm also a student at the university. But I wanted to share what I've learned and experienced as an actress."


4-2. Kim A-jung chosen to star in film "26 Years"
Kim A-jung has decided to star in the film "26 Years", which will be produced by Cheongeoram Films, and is currently undergoing detailed talks as of the end of August. Based on the comic series by the same name by Internet cartoonist Kang Pul, "26 Years" is a story about the children of the victims of the Gwangju Democratization Movement of the 80s plots to assassinate an ex-president. Kim A-jung stars as a shooter whose father was a victim of the democratization movement.


4-3. Kim A-jung, co-author of "Emotional Communications"
"Emotional Communication" (Publisher: Hannarae), which was co-written by actress Kim A-jung and the professors of Korea University's Journalism and Mass Communication Department, was released on May 30. Co-author Kim A-jung has decided to donate all the profits to a treatment center for the disabled.


"Emotional Communication" talks about 'emotions' from six different aspects: fear, anger, disgust, sadness, love, and happiness. It offers integrated knowledge on the cases and examples of each emotion, what kind of responses and expressions occur when we experience each emotion, etc. via various types of sciences such as brain science, physiology, communications, etc.


Kim A-jung has decided to donate all the profits to a treatment center for children who have disabilities with feeling and expressing emotions.



5. Big Bang
5-1. Big Bang announces plans for 2009
G-Dragon, the leader and music producer of group Big Bang, announced, "We plan to take a break for a while after our concert early next year and release a new album around August." He added, "We're going to carefully prepare ourselves so that our fans can enjoy a new side of Big Bang through the new album." The group also stated that G-Dragon plans to release his first solo album and Taeyang his second solo album next year.


5-2. Big Bang's first 2009 concert
Big Bang will be holding three concerts by the name of "Big Show" at the gymnastics stadium at Seoul Olympic Park over a period of two days. The first concert will be held on January 31, 2009 and the rest will be held on February 1, 2009. All thee concerts were completely sold out at each of the three sales. The third concert was sold out in a mere three minutes with 220,000 users simultaneously logging on the booking site.
