A Culture & Art Complex with European Sentiments
Mahno Art Center
‘Mahno’ is the meaning of ‘the house with a large garden’ in French and ‘the hand of art creation’ in Spanish. This place brings up memories of green grass and countryside scenery of Europe with its 33,000㎡ of area. It is loved as a unique space by those who wish to get away from the daily life and breathe in unison with nature, along as an outdoor wedding hall by soon-to-be-married couples in sweet love. The reason why this location has become a famous site is that there are green gardens and marvelous houses that seem to come out from fairy tales. The Upside-Down House that allures tourists, like the house made of cookies in Hänsel und Gretel, is the gallery and art shop. The ends of the triangle roof dangerously stand by touching the ground. The rectangular house structure faces the sky, as if trying to fly away into the clouds. The 1st Floor of the Upside-Down House is the art shop and diverse culture experience center of glass, ceramics, metals, fiber and wood products, whereas the 2nd Floor is used as an exhibition space for artists.
‘The House on Its Side,’ the space where you can enjoy a joyful meal, seems to have been swept away in a whirlwind, lying on its side like the house of Dorothy that landed in the Wizard of Oz. This is an Italian restaurant covered with glass in all sides. If you look a little bit farther, you can see the fountain gushing forth in a small pond. That is not all. There are rooms, bungalows and pensions where families, friends, lovers and colleagues can take a rest. There is also the Namsadang Hand-Down Exhibition Hall where you can meet the joys of Korean culture, such as the samulnori. Furthermore, the Anseong Folk Music Market opens along with performances to provide various things to see and eat. Contact 031-676-7815, http://mahno.co.kr/
Director Kim Jae-bok had decorated the interior with pieces that he obtained during his travels to Europe, and the windows are all in the form of lying down.
